What Every Parent Should Know About Two Dangerous Food Additives: MSG and Aspartame

Are parents unknowingly risking their children’s health with the food choices they make?

Numerous studies have shown that MSG and Aspartame are linked to brain damage in children. These substances are excitotoxins (a type of amino acid), which cause the brain cells to become excited and ultimately burn out. There is strong scientific evidence that these food additives which are pervasive in our food supply, are linked to brain tumors, ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), ADHD, and learning and emotional difficulties. They are also associated with endocrine (hormonal) problems, including premature menstruation.

Are parents unknowingly risking their children’s health with the food choices they make?

Numerous studies have shown that MSG and Aspartame are linked to brain damage in children. These substances are excitotoxins (a type of amino acid), which cause the brain cells to become excited and ultimately burn out. There is strong scientific evidence that these chemicals, which are pervasive in our food supply can cause brain tumors, ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), ADHD, and learning and emotional difficulties. They can also cause endocrine (hormonal) problems later in life. There are also links to Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinsons Disease, ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) and Multiple Sclerosis.

What makes this problem so frightening is that there is no obvious effect in children when they are initially exposed to these substances. The damage only becomes evident years later and it is diagnosed as an endocrine disorder or a learning disorder (autism, dyslexia).

How many parents know that food products marketed specifically to toddlers contain large amounts of MSG and other ingredients that include MSG as well? MSG exists in certain Gerber Graduate products, as well as soups, packaged meats, Chef Boy R Dee products, and chicken nuggets. It is almost impossible to find a chicken nugget product in the supermarket that is MSG-free. The following brands of chicken nuggets contain MSG:

· Weaver

· Purdue

· Tyson

· Butterball

· Banquet

· Redi-food

The food industry works hard to disguise MSG in other ingredients because the public is aware of MSG’s dangers and side effects to a certain extent. Many people still believe that MSG is found mainly in Chinese food, but that is not the case anymore. MSG exists in most packaged and processed food products, soups, meats, sauces gravies, cold cuts and more.

Many individuals check labels for the ingredient ‘Monosodium Glutamate’. They assume there is no MSG if Monosodium Glutamate is not listed. This practice is not only misleading, it is quite dangerous because it puts the American people’s health at risk. It is  destructive to the health of all people, but especially children, elderly people, and people that are especially sensitive to MSG. Sensitive individuals can become severely ill from a single serving of food containing MSG. In addition, people that have certain health conditions, such as Asthma, Parkinson’s disease can have particularly bad reactions to MSG, many times without even realizing the cause.

We all have the right to know if we are ingesting toxic substances. The FDA has sided with the powerful food industry thus far, but this should change very soon. The purpose of this article is to raise awareness of this issue so people can protect their health.

A second purpose is to inspire consumers to make a difference in this battle. The food industry is very powerful and exerts a lot of pressure and influence on other organizations like the FDA and the EPA.
